GETTING RID OF THE AGENDA

I hear about all the time in Mentoring For Free. I’ve heard Michael Dlouhy say it. I’ve heard all of the leaders say it. I’ve heard my own mentor say it. And I’ve said it to myself plenty of times.
Get rid of the agenda!!
But what is an agenda? And how do you know if you have one? Most of us have one. Why should we get rid of it? And most important, HOW can you get rid of it?
WHAT IS AN AGENDA?
What does it mean to have an agenda, and how do you know if you have one?
If you don’t know the answer to those questions, it might be time to ask yourself some questions…
- Are you afraid to call people who have downloaded your ebook?
- Are you disappointed when Michael doesn’t choose your lesson plan, for discussion on the mental cleanse?
- Are you impatient with your personal growth?
- Are you frustrated with the results you are – or are not – getting in your business?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, chances are pretty good that you have an agenda. Because an agenda really is nothing more than your ego getting in the way of your results. Another way of saying it would be that you have an ulterior motive.
If you are afraid to call people who have downloaded your ebook, it could be because you are afraid you’re going to have to sell somebody something. Or you are afraid you’ll get tongue-tied and say the wrong thing. Or maybe you’re afraid of what your new client will think of you.
Disappointment when Michael doesn’t choose your lesson plan for the mental cleanse is a good indication that you are writing for Michael, or his approval. Writing your lesson plan should be from your heart, for your own benefit. When you do that, your lesson is far more likely to touch the hearts of the people who read it.
If you are impatient with your personal growth, feeling that it’s happening too slowly, just remember… it’s a process… a journey, and not a race. You are not in a competition with anyone else. Resisting and struggling against who you are today, or trying to force your growth, will only slow you down even further in the long run. Let growth happen naturally… let the rosebud unfold at its own pace… and you will be stronger for it, and a true leader and inspiration to others.
If you are frustrated because you are not getting good results in your business, is it because you are comparing yourself with others? Remember, getting consistent results and sponsoring people is a process in itself. It doesn’t happen to anyone as soon as they get into Mentoring For Free. Allow yourself to become the leader you would want to follow… the sponsor you would want to be sponsored by.
A question that came to my mind as I was considering this topic was, What’s the difference between positive thinking and having an agenda? What if your self talk says you are getting 10 ebook downloads every week? That’s a lot of downloads! Are you wrong to put that out there and work your hardest to make it happen? Isn’t that having an agenda?
Well… Sarah Thompson tells us we can have as many downloads as we WANT and EXPECT, from any method we choose. I believe she is right.
The difference lies is in your motive for wanting 10 ebook downloads a week. Is it because you want to prove something to someone? Are you trying to look good to your mentor or your team? Are you coming from desperation and a lack mentality?
When I first came to Mentoring For Free, I wanted to replace my husband’s income in the first two years. Not because I wanted to show off or prove anything to anyone, but because I was desperate. When my husband retires, our youngest son will be only 13 years old, and I saw financial shipwreck ahead. Desperation and fear are NOT good motivation, and I had to get rid of that agenda pretty fast.
WHY SHOULD YOU GET RID OF THE AGENDA?
When you have an agenda, people can feel it. It makes them feel as if you are pushing them, trying to make them do something they aren’t ready to do. Removing the agenda will change your business dramatically. It is the ONLY way to become a mentor with a servant’s heart.
Business models drive the behaviour in the field. We often think of that in the context of MLM companies and their compensation plans and policies and procedures. Think of it for a moment in terms of network marketing itself. We are not internet marketers or affiliate marketers, both of which are set up so that you need great numbers of people coming to you on a regular basis. Neither of them give true residual income which is ongoing whether you are actively building or not.
We are network marketers. Relationship builders. Relationships take time, and are never based on one making the other do anything. We don’t force our children to do anything… or at least we shouldn’t, unless we want them to turn against us one day when they are old enough to think and act for themselves. And neither should we try to force anything on our students or our downline. Getting rid of the agenda allows for a healthy, growing, prosperous relationship between us and everyone whose lives we touch.
HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THE AGENDA?
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. You show people the way, but it’s up to them to take it. Don’t let it bother you if they don’t. It isn’t that you don’t care. You do, because you know you can help them, and you want to. But it isn’t going to make or break you if that particular person decides not to.
Always work to have more people in your pipeline than you can handle. That way you are more distanced from any particular individual, and won’t be obsessing over whether that one takes the next step.
The conscious mind is like a sentry. Nothing is allowed into the subconscious mind unless your conscious mind lets it in. This is why it is so important, when talking to clients, to be in the present moment. Listen with your conscious mind, keeping the eight positive emotions in the front of your mind AT ALL TIMES.
THE 8 POSITIVE EMOTIONS
- Desire
- Faith
- Love
- Sex
- Enthusiasm
- Romance
- Hope
- Prosperity
Your primary thought should always be, “It’s not about me… it’s all about YOU… how can I help YOU to build YOUR business?” And how do you know how to help someone if you haven’t really listened to the person, with all eight positive emotions?
ALL you want to do is help someone realize his or her goals and dreams, and offer the tools and training to do so. Learn to let go of the need to control the outcome. It does not matter if the person ever joins you — you treat them all the same. Be there, listening, in all the positive emotions, and be patient. Know that in time, the right ones WILL come to you.
Here’s a bit of wisdom I heard from Michael one time. When you are going to talk to someone, ask yourself what it is you love to do, that if time and money were not an issue, you would be doing right now. Would you be basking in the sun on a white, sandy beach in the South Pacific? Then think… Every person who downloads your ebook wants to be on a white, sandy beach in the South Pacific ALL the time! Imagine you are going to call them to schedule an appointment to go to that sandy beach with you.
Not only does your FEAR disappear, but your AGENDA is gone! Suddenly nothing can STOP you from calling them! Why? Because now you are going to give them something THEY want.

Terrific article Willena! So many people suffer in silence with hidden negatives that end up manifesting into inertia or outright fear. You’ve done an excellent job here of providing tools to begin overcoming those obstacles.

Marquita, thank you for your comment! Most of my life I have been one of the many who have suffered from inertia and outright fear because of hidden negatives. My mom used to say, “Don’t say ‘can’t’ — ‘can’t’ died in the war!” But somehow that didn’t rub off on me and I’ve lived my life by “I can’t”. It feels so good to see that changing!
hi willena, while I do not belong to Mentoring For Free, I know it has made a huge difference to put that other person first, when making that call when they come on my list. They got on that list because they have a need, and it is not your product at least not yet. Being able to talk to them and really find out about them is so key!

Lynda, thank you for your comment! Isn’t it a great feeling, knowing you are truly helping someone? And in helping others to reach their goals, we find we are that much closer to ours as well.
In his “Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons”, Napoleon Hill said one of the most important lessons is “THE HABIT OF DOING MORE THAN PAID FOR”. All great leaders of industry practiced this habit and eventually reaped rewards far out of proportion to the Service rendered via the Law of Increasing Returns.
Thank You, Willena, for Your brilliant piece on SERVICE. You are truly a “Mentor with a Servant’s Heart”.
We can only reap what we sow.

Ken, thank you so much for your comment! You know I’m learning from the best… not the least among whom is you! I’ve learned a lot from you.
It is devastating indeed how many people are silently suffering, and when they finally express their feelings in most cases this fatal and often misunderstood by people. Your article perfectly emphasized on that!!

Anna, thank you for your comment. I am not quick to express my feelings, for fear of exactly that… being misunderstood. I’m glad I’m learning to be more forthcoming. As long as I think of the other person first, then I know if he/she misunderstands, it isn’t because I am at fault. It’s a learning process, for sure.
Great thoughts Willena!
Fear is so powerful if left unchecked. We can’t allow fear to dictate the decisions we make or don’t make!

Hi Willena
Great article. Sometimes when disappointed or challenged by life we retreat inwards, Your reminder that it’s a journey and we need to always think about others is a valuable one.

Anne, thank you for your comment! Retreating inwards is safer and often less painful, but it’s certainly not the way to grow.
“An agenda really is nothing more than your ego getting in the way of your results.”
What an excellent way to describe what having an agenda means in this context.
I know that personally my agenda does get in the way quite often, but I do try to make a habit of confronting fears and my shyness that I know get in the way of progress so I’m happy to say that it isn’t as big of a problem as it has been in the past.
Thanks for a great post, Willena!
Melanie, thank you for your comment! If it isn’t as big a problem as it was, then you are definitely making progress. I’m glad for you!
