This is a picture of Nathaniel’s very first NaNoWriMo website badge. Unlike the regular program, where you must write 50,000 words, the Young Writers Program allows the participant to set his own goal. Nathaniel’s was 10,000 words, and tonight he reached his goal!

Here’s a picture of Nathaniel on another Wonderful Day in 2011… May 4, the day he went to Disneyland. It must have been a dazzlingly glorious day, because I scoured the pictures and could not find one without those sunglasses!

I did it!! I did it!! My PERSISTENCE paid off! I passed the 50,000 word mark at approximately 5:00 AM, after typing all night.

Am I crazy? Possibly. Would I do it again? You betcha! This is my 7th year to do NaNoWriMo, and my 7th consecutive win. It’s the highlight of my year!

Timothy and Nathaniel are doing well, and I’m positive they will reach their respective goals by midnight on November 30.

Oh, and in case anyone is wondering… 50K is a drop in the bucket, and only the first draft. My novel is still a long ways from being done. But I’ve made a real dent in it. Continue reading »

Remember all those times your language arts teacher told you, “Write about what you know!”? She was right! In this video, shared by Linda Grace Cox Duane Forrester tells us why.

Duane, aka The Online Marketing Guy, is the Senior Program Manager of MSN and Microsoft. He is also the author of Turn Clicks into Customers, and coauthor of How to Make Money from Your Blog.

If blogging is an important part of your business building plan, then you probably already know how easily inspiration dries up and you have a tough time coming up with subject matter. Writing what you are passionate about, in your own voice, will keep your interest alive and you’ll add value to your blog with every post. You also won’t be nearly so likely to quit before the money starts coming in.

And the Madness begins again! Actually, it began Monday morning at midnight. November Madness… the Madness that is NaNoWriMo!

So what on earth NaNoWriMo?? Simply put, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month.

It’s that special, crazy, frantic, deliriously wonderful time of the year when thousands upon thousands of writers worldwide commit to writing a 50000 word novel during the month of November. Some published writers are involved, and some have become published since joining NaNoWriMo, but the vast majority are just everyday people who love to write, and want to try their hand at a long term project that may some day see print. I used to think I had no imagination, and I wondered what had happened to it. It was vividly alive when I was a child. How well I remember the days when the heads of timothy grass were caterpillars, snug in their tiny matchbox beds… dolls and stuffed animals were students sitting in rows in my little classroom… the low stone wall and the grass below it were a swimming pool… dolls were real families with a mother and a father and several small children. I also remember how painfully frustrating it was that I could not MAKE them come alive, and really BE what I wanted them to be. Continue reading »

Ever spend tons of time writing a great email…I mean it’s well written copy,
incorporates psychological triggers, includes a call to action…

You know, all the copy writing stuff that’s supposed to get responses…

And…NOTHING!

Or perhaps you’ve spent hours doing research, written the most amazing
article on a particular subject.

You post it, and the only ones who bother to read it are your closest friends…
and your mother!

Yeah…me too.

Fact is, it doesn’t matter how many psychological triggers you incorporate
effectively if your email isn’t opened, does it?
