What is a Mental Cleanse?

When the water is clear
There is no need to fear,
No danger can hide there
What’s there, you can SEE!

When your mind is calm,
The chatter all silenced
Only then can you answer,
“Who am I? Who is ME?”

When you don’t know who you really are, how can you know if the path you are on is the one you really want to be on? How do you know you’re not there only because others have talked you into it?

So many things can send us down a particular path. Guilt, frustration, the needs of others, a sense of duty… So much chatter in our minds telling us to Do This or Do That. These other paths are not necessarily WRONG. But they keep us from achieving our dreams and accomplishing the one thing that we were put here on earth for… they prevent us doing what we were meant to do.

Would you like to quiet the chatter in your mind so you can see clearly enough to be the person you were designed to be? That is precisely what a Mental Cleanse does. It has other benefits as well. Participating in the mental cleanse was a big factor in helping me through the worst of things after the death of my oldest son in December 2009.

Each week in our mastermind group, we read a chapter from Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, write down our thoughts and lessons learned from that chapter, and post them to the site. On Wednesdays, at 3pm and 8pm EST, we brainstorm a number of those lessons learned.

Many leaders, including myself, say that the 30 Day Cleanse is the #1 reason for their success in network marketing. We’ve heard it said many times, “To make more, we have to become more.” When we take back our thoughts, we are becoming more.

Many network marketers have read Think and Grow Rich on their own… and they didn’t get a lot out of it. When you study it with a good mastermind group, it helps you to find the treasure buried deep within yourself.

Here are my thoughts from a chapter we studied recently…

All of us get into a negative mindset now and then, where we believe we are incompetent, or not good enough, to do whatever it is we need to do in order to move forward in life. Some call it a rut. I call it a rat hole. No one really wants to be there, and yet we would far rather stay there than to step out of our comfort zone, into the unknown.

So, how do we get out of it?

Self talk.

We ALL have a self talk, whether we realize it or not… either a positive one that we make a point of adopting, or the default negative one consisting of all the lies we believe about ourselves. A lot of it is programming from the time we were small… But the good news is, we can change that programming by putting in our own. It’s like re-programming the hard drive of your computer.

A good self talk is empowering, and includes forward action. It can be as simple as “I can do ALL things through Christ, who strengthens me.”

A self talk can also be longer and touching on more specifics. Whatever the length, it should be memorized and repeated countless times throughout the day. It should be one’s last conscious thought on falling asleep at night, and the first thing one thinks about in the morning.

Here is my self talk:

I HAVE ABSOLUTE control over my thoughts.
I ACCEPT full responsibility for where I am today.
I SEEK the truth, no matter what it costs.
I CHOOSE to DIRECT and CONTROL my own state of mind.
I REFUSE to accept what I don’t want.
I CLOSE my mind against all people who depress or discourage me in any way.
I OPEN my mind to admit only what will serve me and encourage my growth.
I DEMAND riches of every kind.
I DETERMINE what form my riches will take, and how much.
I KNOW the road that leads to riches.
I CHOOSE to follow the road map that will keep me on that road.
I CHOOSE NOT to worry about what others think, do or say.
I CHOOSE to believe that nothing in life is worth the price of worry.
I REFUSE all negative influences.
I KEEP my mind busy with a definite purpose, backed by a definite plan.
I POSSESS the Master Key that unlocks the door to Life’s bountiful riches.

All of the above is, of course, subject to God’s sovereignty. It is just my way of bringing my own thoughts under the captivity of Christ, rather than the default. For example, the “riches of every kind” has little to do with money, and everything to do with the abundant life God has promised to His children.
