Napoleon Hill says all who succeed in life get off to a bad start, and pass through many heartbreaking struggles before they “arrive.” The turning point in the lives of those who succeed usually comes at the moment of some crisis, through which they are introduced to their “other selves.”

This is where I felt like I was stuck, for a while now. Face to face with my “other self”, but unwilling to hand over the reins of my life. Sometimes I feel as if I have made no progress at all. But in my heart I know that isn’t true. Continue reading »

As I was reading through the chapter this time I was struck by the notes I penciled in the margin last time. I’m also struck by how lessons come from all directions when we need to learn them.

1. Michael suggests we look at previous lessons we’ve written, to be astounded and blessed by how much we’ve grown. But what if you look back at a previous lesson and find you have made NO progress… that you STILL haven’t applied the lessons learned?

2. Michael recently referred to the monkey on a friend’s back, and the serious problems it has caused that person in terms of health issues.

3. I’m told, The way you do anything is the way you do everything.

And then there’s David Haines’ brilliant lesson plan Continue reading »

Well, I can’t say I would take the risk this young man did… has more than once, I daresay. But it speaks to me of just how much we are capable of, when we do our research, test the waters, and dive in where others refuse to go.

Here we see Tyler Bradt as he completes his World Record Waterfall Descent, over the Palouse Falls in Washington — in his kayak! This drop was re-measured officially, after the video was posted, and it was found to be 189 feet — several feet taller than originally thought. Tyler came out of the experience with minor injuries, including a sprained wrist and a massive hit.

Tyler Bradt had a burning desire and the faith that he could do it. He counted the cost and measured the distance — and then HE DID IT!!

What you are about to see will inspire you to examine the excuses you make not to tackle certain challenges in your own life.

“Souvenir D’enfance” by Richard Clayderman is not an easy piece to play. This girl plays beautifully, with a lyrical maturity that is rare in youngsters new to their instruments. She has been playing the piano for only three years.

And if that isn’t enough to wow you — she has NO fingers on her right hand!

Watch her amazing performance…

Most of us will never have to face challenges as huge as this girl has overcome. But we all have challenges that are huge to us.

I live with ADHD. Some see it as a handicap, but my 17-year-old son wisely calls “Hyper-Mentally Active”. Now THAT is seeing the positive side of the matter! It opens up a whole new world of possibilities for me that I am only beginning to explore.

What is YOUR biggest challenge as you work toward YOUR goals and aspirations? I’d love to read your stories in the comments below.

John C. Maxwell was a young man when he realized that personal growth had to be intentional, and that he couldn’t wait till he had all his ducks in a row before he got started. He also realized that life does not provide a good growth environment. We must provide our own.

Napoleon Hill tells me I have the ability to completely control my own mind. Furthermore, he says my thoughts are the ONLY thing I can control.

The Scriptures tell me to bring every thought under the captivity of Christ. As a teenage girl, reading that verse for the first time, I thought how impossible that was. I knew the Bible was true, and therefore even that verse had to be possible. But try as I might, I never succeeded.

Now, with the help of Napoleon Hill Continue reading »

Here are my thoughts from this week’s chapter.

Chapter 2 – DESIRE: The Starting Point of All Achievement

“Your real WHY is about who YOU really are. Your driving
factor must be WAY more than money. Your WHY should
make you CRY!” ~ Michael Dlouhy

Who am I, really? What drives me? What do I want…or want to get away from? What do I REALLY want? What situation in life do I want to get out of so it never ever, EVER happens again?

It’s not about money…the truth is, I would like to be FREE FROM ever having to think about money again. It has been far too huge a factor all my life…there has never been enough even for what most people consider necessities. Shoes that fit…pants without holes in the knees…backpacks that zip
up…dental work…eyeglasses…fresh fruits and veggies….

I used to ask Ian to give me cash for the groceries rather than using the debit card. I would make a game of seeing how much of it I could hang onto…i.e. stash away in a jar for a rainy day…by skimping even further on my scanty allowance. After a while, as prices went up and the allowance stayed the same, it wasn’t fun any more. I lost my spirit, and didn’t even do the shopping myself any more. To this day, my husband does most of the shopping on his way home from work. It’s
easier that way because we live so far out in the country, and seldom have the full amount needed to do a month’s worth at a time. And it still isn’t a game.

I’ve known all along that there has to be more to life than straining to see up over the rim of the hole we’ve dug for ourselves. But it’s only now that I begin to see it as a REALITY…that it’s only a matter of time before we have MORE than enough to live healthy, happy lives. No more worrying and counting pennies and wondering if we can buy that desperately needed pair of shoes for our son this month, or if he’ll have to wait till two paycheques down the road.

And, more important, having enough to give away generous amounts of money to others. We have been on the receiving end for far too long. We want to pay it forward, and give to others who are in need.

So it’s not about money…money is only a tool. It’s not about goals either…goals are the means, the stepping stones, for reaching the fulfillment of my WHY.

Last time through Hill’s book, I was determined to dig deep, to discover what is holding me back from moving ahead in my life. There are things to do and people to see. Why was I stuck, when I really wanted those things?

This time through, it’s time to stop digging…I know now what’s holding me back. There’s no point in further analyzing or trying to figure things out. I’m sure more things will come to light down the road a ways, but it isn’t for me to dig around any more. NOW is the time for ACTION.

Who am I? A writer, with a story to tell…many stories…stories that will challenge, encourage and edify my readers. And whether I choose a well-known publishing house, or go the self-publishing route, it takes money…and plenty of it. I am not going to put years, or even months, of my life, into writing a good book, only to have it fizzle out like a popped balloon or a burned out light bulb. I have something to offer, and I want to make the very most of my opportunities to serve in this way. It is my calling…my ministry…my delight.

What do I really want? A life free from financial worries. To be able to buy what we WANT as well as what we need…to go places and do things with my husband and children…to visit my mom across the continent more than once in 25 years…to be able to replace what’s worn out with something far nicer and of better quality…to get to the place where my goals and dreams have room to grow and expand…and to give my children a reason to believe that THEY can dream and build and grow too.

And I really REALLY want to help others to find that magical place in their lives as well…to see their eyes light up as the truth dawns on them and they “get it”…to delight in their new found power when they see their own potential…and to rejoice with them when they begin to achieve their own goals.

How will I go about accomplishing this?

I am working on my 6 Steps. Who cares if I don’t know what is a reasonable amount to aim for by the end of the year? I have chosen a dollar figure and will work until I have reached it. Who cares if I don’t know how many people I need on my team in order to reach it? My mentors will help me get all those ducks in a row, if need be, but for me the next step is precisely that… a STEP… ACTION… and then another step and another and another. Just keep moving. Don’t even look behind me, and DON’T try to figure it all out ahead of time. BURN those bridges, PUT ON the blinders, and keep
MOVING forward.

I am so grateful to Michael & Linda, Judi, Judy and Patti…and all of the other wonderful mastermind friends at MentoringFor Free who are rooting for me and cheering me on.

CHAPTER 2: DESIRE: THE TURNING POINT OF ALL ACHIEVEMENT

The 1st Step Toward Riches

Maybe I’m going about this the wrong way. Maybe if I just read the chapter and slapped together a lesson this wouldn’t be so hard. Or maybe I’m like the proverbial onion and not recognizing that each layer really is deeper and means progress.

I have a burning desire to know what it is that’s holding me back. But instead of bringing me closer to the answer, it seems like all it’s doing is frustrating me and making me feel as if I am getting nowhere.

Desire is the starting point. Without it I will get nowhere. The intensity of my desire determines my success. So. If I am not getting anywhere, I must not have the desire. Why not???

I’ve been listening to the audio done on this chapter last time through the book, where Michael talked about conditioning, and the effect on our society by labour unions. Here in Canada it may be even more so because of our socialistic society. For me, it seems not so much the “don’t do more than is expected, because you won’t receive more for your efforts.” I am more like the baby elephant who grows up thinking that paltry piece of rope and piddly little stake will keep him in place, because it did when he was little. I grew up poor… father died when I was 7, and stepfather was an alcoholic… continued poor as an adult… married twice, and both times my husband was poor… I could go on, but you’ve heard it all before. My challenge is to get past that faulty thinking. How?

How indeed.

You know what I think? I think the stinkin thinkin is so deeply ingrained in my subconscious after 56 years, that the ONLY thing I can do is put the blinders on so I am not distracted from my goal, and “just DO it.” I am continually plagued by feelings of inadequacy, and scattered-ness, so that even what I DO get done feels like nothing. But Mentoring For Free works. The Recipe works. It works for everyone else who does it faithfully, diligently, consistently and without an agenda. It WILL work for ME too!

Man, I can see how vitally important it is to change my thinking. I feel as if I came into Mentoring For Free as a -10 in personal growth. Maybe I’m just in too big a hurry. This is my third time through the book, but there has also been a lot of stress and turbulence for our whole family during that time as well. I wish I could hurry up the process of growth so I can see big results right away. But maybe that’s where I am going wrong in my thinking.

A day at a time… a lesson at a time… and MUCH gratitude to each one who has helped me along the path.

Who told you it couldn’t be done, and what great achievements has he performed that qualified him to set up limitations for you?  ~ Napoleon Hill

How often has a family member, friend or even a stranger put you down for an idea or course of action… and you allowed it to happen? Have you ever wondered why? Why do we let them do it? Is it really because they are genuinely concerned for our future and know us well enough to know we are headed for disaster? Or are we just letting them throw cold water on our dreams because that’s we’ve always done?

When we are insecure in our dreams, or uncertain as to our ability to achieve certain goals, it is easy to let someone stop us. Our emotions get in the way of reason and optimism. Next time it happens, ask yourself if the person is qualified to limit you in that particular area. If not, don’t let him or her kill your dreams!
